The Special Interest Electioneering Disclosure Bill, SB 43, was passed on a 26-7 bipartisan vote in the Wisconsin State Senate.
posted 01/19/10 On Tuesday, January 19th, the state Senate will vote on SB 43, the Special Interest Electioneering Disclosure Bill. Contact your Senator and urge her/him to vote in favor of this important bill. Call the state Legislative Hotline at 800-362-9472 and your message will be relayed to your state Senator. It has been more than 30 years since the LWV state membership agreed upon the positions from which we support this bill. We need to bring those claiming to produce "issue ads" while referencing candidates positively or negatively during campaigns into the regulations for independent spenders. The electorate has the right to know the funding sources of these campaign activities; and the producers of these ads should have to abide by the same limits that apply to campaigns and registered political action committees.
posted 01/19/10 The US Senate is expected to vote as early as Wednesday, January 20th on an amendment that would weaken the Clean Air Act and block EPA action against climate change. If it passes, the amendment will put public health at risk and jeopardize long-overdue action to cut emissions from the biggest polluters. The Murkowski Amendment would let America's biggest polluters off the hook and negatively affect thousands of American businesses that are waiting for Congress to set clear energy and climate policies that will unlock billions of dollars in job-creating clean energy investments. Make your voice heard with those of other activists around the country. Ask your friends, family and other League members to contact their US Senators in Wahington DC as well! Tell them to oppose the Murkowski Amendment and to support action against global climate change.
posted 01/13/10 The US Senate and the House of Representatives have both passed health care reform legislation. But a final bill is not yet ready to go to the President. This is a critical time to urge your Representative and Senators, as well as the President, to pass comprehensive health care reform that will extend coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans. Final legislation should include a strong public insurance option and should not discriminate on the basis of gender.
Take action today and call your Senators and Representative at 202-224-3121 or 202-225-3121 to reach the Capitol switchboard. Call the White House at 202-456-1414 or 202-456-1111.
posted 12/9/09 The LWV-US has lobbied hard this year to advocate for changes to the current health care system which is endangerig both our economy and our health. Countless letters have been sent to Senators and Representatives since we began in 2009. Today it is more important than ever that you take action to urge your Senators to support strong health care reform legislation. The House of Representatives has passed a comprehensive health care reform bill with a public option. America is facing a health care crisis caused by a combination os skyrocketing costs and an insurance system that leaves 47 million living day to day without coverage. The Senate has a historic opportunity to pass comprehensive healthcare reform now. Contact Senators Feingold and Kohl and tell them to support strong health care reform legislation. Tell them that the current health care system is endangering both our economy and our health, and that business as usual is not an option.
posted 12/2/09 Assembly Bill 353 and Senate Bill 240, legislation to restore the vote to non-incarcerated felons, has not yet been scheduled for a floor vote in either house of the State Legislature. Contact your legislators to encourage them them to restore the right to vote for over 42,000 Wisconsin citizens deemed safe to live in our communities, work, pay taxes, and raise families.
posted 12/2/09 On December 1, 2009 the Impartial Justice bill, providing full public financing for state Supreme Court campaigns, was signed into law by Governor Jim Doyle. With this action, Wisconsin becomes the first and only state to enact public financing legislation this year and joins North Carolina and New Mexico as the only states to ever create public financing systems for judicial elections. This historic breakthrough for campaign finance reform was a decade in the making, as the Impartial Justice bill was first proposed in 1999. Thanks to Governor Doyle, the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, Common Cause, and the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.
posted 11/27/09 Ask Governor Doyle to sign the impartial justice bill into law. The Impartial Justice bill, establishing publicly financed state Supreme Court elections, needs Governor Doyle's signature to become law. Please take a minute to call Governor Doyle's office and urge him to sign the Impartial Justice bill as he has said he will do. The number is 608-266-1212.
posted 11/13/09 This afternoon Governor Doyle vetoed AB 138, the bill to restore the independent DNR Secretary. Contact your legislators to encourage them to override Governor Doyle. The Legislature can override the veto with a two-thirds vote in each house.
